With a traditional crown, your dentist takes an impression or digital scan of the damaged tooth and sends it to a dental laboratory to make the replacement. With CEREC technology, the dentist scans the prepared tooth using digital technology. The same machine will mill the crown right there in the dental surgery, enabling the fitment of the permanent crown in the same appointment.

How Do CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work?

CEREC treatment uses digital technology to create a custom crown while you’re at the dental practice.

1. The dentist prepares the damaged tooth

Your dentist will remove any signs of decay and damage from the remains of the tooth. They will then prepare the tooth to support the crown.

2. A digital scan is next

A digital scanner captures detailed images of the prepared tooth and those around it.

3. The machine uses the images to design a tooth that matches your mouth

The software translates the digital information into a crown design. Your dentist can adjust the design if it’s needed.

4. The machine mills the crown

When your dentist is satisfied that the design is the perfect fit for your mouth, the digital design is sent to the on-site milling machine. The milling machine cuts the crown from a dental ceramic block.

5. The dentist inspects the crown

The dentist checks the crown for fit, shape, color and bite, making adjustments as needed.

6. The dentist places the crown

If the dentist is satisfied with the restoration, the crown is bonded onto the prepared tooth. There should be no discernible difference between the crown and your natural tooth in either appearance or function.
