Santa Clara started out as one of the original 21 churches, called missions, established by Spain in the territory of California. Santa Clara is often referred to as THE Mission City, even though it was the 8th mission built.
Originally a series of large rancheros, by the 1850’s Santa Clara was divided into build able lots with a very specific purpose in mind. If the builder changed the purpose to something different, the land reverted back to the original owner.
The first item scheduled was a schoolhouse, followed by a church. Several hotels soon followed, and then general mercantile businesses. 23 houses were imported from Boston and became the first residents of the town.
Today’s town would not be recognizable to the earlier settlers. Blessed with a mild climate perfect for agriculture, Santa Clara is located in the heart of the Silicon Valley region, Santa Clara is a destination for both residents and visitors.
